PHD Programme

Overview
Candidates reading for the Master of Engineering (MEng) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees pursue independent but supervised research in a field of advanced study either on a full-time or part-time basis. MEng and PhD candidates admitted in Sem I, AY07-08 and thereafter are required to attend classes and pass the examinations of 3 and 6 graduate-level courses respectively. MEng and PhD candidates admitted in Sem I, AY07-08 and thereafter are also required to pass a Qualifying Examination at the end of 12 and 24 months respectively. On completion of the research, the candidate is required to submit a thesis on his research for examination. For PhD candidates, there is also an oral examination on the course matter and other related courses.
Research Assistantship
The University provides research assistantship in the form of financial assistance to outstanding candidates for them to pursue higher degree studies by research on a full time basic leading to a Master of Engineering (MEng) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. The research assistantship comprises a monthly stipend in the range of S$1,500 to S$2,000. The stipend is subject to revision from time to time, as decided by the University. The award will cover the annual research fee, amenities fee and the annual computer fees. The scholarship is tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable every 12 months, subject to the scholar’s good progress. The maximum period of the award is two years for a MEng degree candidate and three years for a PhD candidate. Depending on external programs, selected candidates who meet the eligibility criteria could be given additional top-up in the form of monthly allowance. The external programs can be industry-sponsored programs which offer augmentation grants to candidates to work on topics relevant to the industry.
Teaching Assistantship
The school offers Teaching Assistantship to outstanding candidates pursuing higher degree studies by research. The teaching assistant is expected to divide his/her time between assistantship duties and pursuit of a graduate degree. Teaching assistant is expected to spend approximately 10 contact hours a week on teaching and/or laboratory duties. The Teaching Assistantship award comprises a monthly stipend of S$2,000 per month and covers the annual research fee, amenities fee and the annual computer fees. The scholarship is tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable every 12 months, subject to the scholar’s good progress. The maximum period of the award is two years for a MEng degree candidate and three years for a PhD candidate.
